Double Fault by Lionel Shriver

So Wimbledon was in progress, I was in my local bookshop and this novel caught my eye. Its the story of Willy, a low ranking tennis professional on the way up when we first encounter her. She's been playing tennis since aged four and is now...

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

*****

Easy to read, page turner of a novel whose main character is Peter, a bullied teenager, who heads into high school one morning armed and kills ten people. I found many of the characters to be cliched and a bit one dimensional. But despite that the...

Michael Clayton

*****

This movie started well, George Clooney  and Tilda Swinton were great. Felt it fizzled out into a "seen that done that" legal genre film which was a pity as it could have been so much more.

Weeds, Season 4

*****

The first episode of this new series was disappointing. Having enjoyed the previous seasons of this American TV comedy, this opening episode dragged along and wasn't as funny or entertaining as usual.

Mad Men Series 1

Just 3 episodes in and I'm really looking forward to the next instalment of this drama series . Set in an advertising world of New York in 1960, it centres on Don Draper, the creative director of the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency. ...

Top Chef Season 4

*****

As the contestants get whittled down, the competition is getting tougher, patience is wearing thin and the tension is rising. This is my favourite reality tv cookery based series and I've enjoyed the 3 preceding series.

Dirty Sexy Money

*****

I started off liking this and hoped it would go in a particular direction but it's degenerated badly after only four episodes. The focus on the bimbos and nitwits is very annoying. The interesting characters are Tripp and his wife. Even the Senator son who likes trannies could have some decent story lines if they tried. Initially the priest son had potential too. But it has all been squandered by turning them into incredibly boring caricatures. Who, apart from Hollywood execs, would think that anyone else would find rich self-obsessed spoiled brats interesting?
